The Story About Losing Stuff

From the beginning of our relationship, I have had to keep track of Steve's keys, wallet, phone...really almost any belonging he has.  In fact, it has gotten to the point where if I see something of his in an odd place, without thinking about it, I make a note in my head.  And the next time, Steve says..."Have you seen my keys?"...I can automatically rattle off the random location where they are placed.  Sometimes, he calls me at work, and much like Information Services, I am able to troubleshoot successfully remotely.

I distinctly remember the first time I realized he had this issue.  We were driving back from a trip to the Laswell cabins.  We had stopped at a gas station when he realized he could not find his wallet.  I was freaking out!  When I lose something, watch out!  I am obsessed until I located the missing item...doesn't matter how big...how small...how often I utilize that item...if it is the middle of the night...I must find it NOW.

Steve was very calm...he had obviously done this drill before.  I was a mad woman...tearing the car apart...looking under floor mats...checking every nook and cranny.  Until finally we found it stuck in a crevice.  Turned out, it wasn't an anomaly.  Steve really does lose everything.

Even though it would have been a total pain dealing with the ramifications, I always wondered if he would learn a lesson if something really did get stolen.  But you know the funny thing...he has the best of luck with recovering his items.  I will never forget sitting in our backyard one beautiful summer day, and all of a sudden a random dude stuck his head over our fence and called out..."Stephen Laswell??"

We walked over...and he held out Steve's wallet.  For the second time, Steve had dropped his wallet in the parking lot and had the fortune of it being recovered by the most honest stranger ever. Probably didn't hurt that Steve never has cash! : )

Anyhow...over the years, this has been both maddening to me and a source of laughs.  I have tried to tell myself that if he doesn't care, then I shouldn't care.  Whatevs!

But the truth is...as I've said before...maybe that is why we work well together.  I am always going to be a little bit uptight...he is always going to be laissez-faire...a little bit country and a little bit of rock 'n' roll.  :)  Seems very fitting for the parents of an Osmond.

Love to all,
Debbie
