Last Monday evening at 8:30pm, I glanced at my personal email account. I had an email from my daycare provider that had come in a few minutes after 8:00pm.
The owner said that she was heartbroken but had to shut down the daycare center...effective Friday at 6:00pm. Yep! That's right...four days notice. Why in the world do I have to give adequate notice to everyone that I do business with, but they do not owe me the same respect?
I only cried for a little bit that night on the phone to Michael. I needed to be frustrated and feel sorry for myself for a moment. Then the next morning as I dropped off the kids, I remembered that there were dozens of other parents going through this and that all of the teachers had lost their jobs...so I decided that maybe I wasn't being personally targeted :).
Maybe these things just happen in life.
So...for a couple of weeks, Poppy and Oz are just hanging out on their own at the condo during the day. I figured that they are mature for their ages.
Do I have to tell you that I'm kidding? :) I had hoped we knew each other better than that!
Grandma is filling in for me for a week or so.
I hated saying goodbye to "school" and to the teachers for the last time on Friday...but I feel like I've gotten more accustomed to goodbyes. As I've processed things over the last few years, I try to keep in mind what Vida told me at our former daycare center...'sometimes people are only meant to be in your life for a season.' It has definitely brought me comfort more than once over some tumultuous times.
Some memories from our time at Especially Kids.

February 6, 2017
I took a little break. And then the break got longer and longer. And then so much had happened that I couldn't decide what to say first.
So, I'll just start with something easy, and we'll work our way to the other changes later.
It's my Ozzy's birthday today.
Two years ago, when I was wringing my hands and trying to attend to Poppy while he was crying, I couldn't have imagined this day coming. Everyone told me that I needed to give it two years, and things would get easier. I didn't believe that. But it was true.
He is a delightful little boy. He adores music already. Sometimes, if a good song comes on, he'll stop playing and just lie on the floor listening intently. Oz makes the sweetest faces. He loves to look at people out of the corner of his eye. I think he knows he's being cute. The best is when he suddenly comes running over to me for a hug and then goes right back to playing.
He seems really happy and makes all of us smile often.
Poppy was so excited about his party yesterday that she could barely contain herself. It was a good day. And it was nice to have the family all together again for a post-Christmas catch-up.
I may never understand exactly why Oz was coming into this world while Steve was leaving. The sad reality of that...the cruelness of that...will always take my breath away. But I do know that I'm very glad that I have had the gift of being a parent to this precious, joyful, exuberant boy. He has truly been a light for the entire family.
Happy Birthday little boy. Poppy and I love you.
