Steve and I never discussed how hard things got. I think we both tried to keep up the illusion...at least with each other...that everything might be okay.
After he died, and I looked through his text messages, I cried when I found notes to his best friend with emotion he never expressed to me.
It was a gift to find these...because I sometimes felt like I should have done better.

Finding these text messages are the treasured archives of the man that loved you so. You both did the best you could...and while you may call it the "illusion" I think it was just hope. And that was the essence of things left unsaid....you both held onto hope that there was time to say it all. How I wish that could have been for you and Steve. I can't say it enough: I am so very sorry this happened to your family.
ReplyDeleteHere I go again......laughed hysterically at the picture of "the basket" you posted....and now I am crying over this post. I just knew in my heart that you were Steve's hero. Bless your heart. ♡

David and I never discussed it either, until the end. I still wonder and worry that I should have done better too. I know that you and I did the best we could, and we have to be satisfied with that. When you are in the thick of the battle, you just have to hunker down and fight. That's what we were doing.
ReplyDeleteWe often talked about that. I remember that conversation specifically. You did a great job with what was going on around you. I can't express the appreciation that I have for you taking care of my best friend. It was always easy for him and I to talk to each other honestly and openly. That was one of the many favorite parts of our friendship.
