October 7, 2015

Today after work, I gave Poppy some generic Spaghettios and packed up the babies to take them back to Philadelphia United Methodist Church...the site that held a chicken noodle benefit dinner for us a few weeks ago.  Church members, in conjunction with the Royal Neighbors of America local chapter, brought in some dinner this evening and presented us with their gift.

I still have to tell you...I get nervous taking the babies to places on my own.  Isn't that silly?  I guess that taking them on my own means relinquishing some control.  I can't possibly handle both of them at once for an entire evening.  Inevitably, their needs will overlap.

When we go somewhere new, Poppy needs ample time to warm up, and if Oz needs to eat at the same time, I have to just let others take care of him.

To make matters worse, I was mortified when I arrived, trying to look like I had the whole parenting thing down pat, and started to change Oz' diaper, only to find a disgusting crusty dried smushy poop in there.  It got ALL over everything, and some of it looked like it had been there for days.

Awesome.

Then Poppy would not stop crying.  CLINGY.  I forgot a sippy cup for her.  As both of them balled for a while, I begged them in my mind to be sweet like I know they can be.

BUT...despite all of my failings, I ended up having fun.  The small group that gathered there to support us were wonderful.  They fed Oz and made him giggle.  He got to hang out with some new guy friends...Ed and Forrest.  I think he was liking the change from the usual estrogen.

Poppy warmed up eventually and went into the nursery, where she found toys (and someone's car keys, but we are going to forget about that).  She also decided to run around without a diaper on for a few moments.  I'm not sure that the "no britches" look is appropriate at a church dinner.

All in all though, I had a great time having a nice meal and chatting with new friends.

Thank you to the Royal Neighbors of America Chapter, Philadelphia United Methodist Church and everyone who attended or donated.

How lucky is my family to be loved?

When all is said-and-done, I hope that is what Poppy and Oz take from this.  There are many people who care.

  1. So many people you have no idea! Very happy you are being cared for as well as your babies. You are an awesome mom-even when the sippy cups get left behind and diapers are a bit much :) Blessings-Gail from Maine

  2. Sorry that I missed the dinner. I have eaten there before with my mom, oh, so many years ago. But you are surrounded by folks that care---many without names or faces. But with you in spirit and love. And this is better than noodles. Just sayin...
