Shortly into the visit, Bren told us she had an ultrasound recently, and Steve asked to see the pictures. Steve took the ultrasound printout and peered at it intently. He turned it around in his hands several times trying to figure out the proper orientation.
He took it to my sister, a post-partum RN, to get the scoop on ultrasound interpretation. They were reviewing the scans together, when I looked over to see Steve with furrowed brow very earnestly asking my sister..."Soooooooo...it goes this way? So...like...this part is towards your butt?"
Really, Steve...that's all you could come up with...'Towards Your BUTT????'
And my factual sister, ultrasound printout back-in-hand, seriously putting it up to her uterus-area to illustrate the baby's positioning for him.
Dear Lord...please make them stop.
And even though I would roll my eyes in jest when the two of them would get into their very technical, deep, 'shop-talk' medical discussions...another part of me couldn't wait to hear what silliness might come next.

'Shop talk' made me smile. So, perhaps a new trend can begin....instead of saying a woman "is with child" we may say, "Oh she's got a baby in the shop." And when meeting with one's obstetrician they can write it off as 'shop talk'. Ultrasounds are interesting things. Like looking at those pictures, that when you gaze at them long enough, the photo turns 3-D like. Yet they are miraculous, as well. Steve must have become a 'sponge' soaking in all the information for when he became a father.
