In 2011, we had another couple over for Memorial Day. I had always resisted learning to play euchre...I thought it was complicated and made no sense whatsoever...but finally gave in, and ended up begrudgingly enjoying it. We put a table in the backyard and settled in to play euchre for the evening.
When our married friends arrived, I noted right away that my dear pal was not partaking in an adult beverage...curious!...and she was drinking caffeine-free soda...curious-er!
When I caught Steve alone, I shared my suspicions that she was 'with child.' I hatched a plan to try to get it out of them. So, when we were all standing in the kitchen chatting later on, I began talking about the fact that we decided we may want to have children someday soon, and I hoped it would work out...but you never can tell because we were just so old, yadda yadda yadda. None of this was untrue at all, by the way, but I did have an ulterior motive for starting the conversation.
But my plan was foiled, and they didn't bite. :)
Not shockingly, Steve went a bit deeper into his role than necessary, and relayed that he hoped his sperm count was high, and he was considering having it checked out.
Dude...we were just trying to do some reconnaissance...you didn't have take it that far...
It was pretty funny, but not a complete surprise, when a couple of weeks later, lifelong hypochondriac Steve happily reported that his doctor had called to tell him that his sperm count was excellent. I wasn't even aware that since our Memorial Day conversation, he had gotten himself more worried, became convinced that he needed to provide a sample and went in for testing even before experiencing any issues at all.
He was so excited about the results.
I am smiling at this post. Do you have any idea how accomplished you are as a writer? "Dude....we were just trying to do some reconnaissance...you didn't have to take it that far..." But more, you were an accomplished wife. **And I know that the past tense hurts so badly. I am almost afraid to use it....but the writer in me says I must.
