Steve, Poppy, Gussie and I headed down to his family's cabins near Patoka Lake. Who would have ever thought that would be the last time we would go there together.
We had no idea that just one month later our lives would begin to fall apart.
I wasn't happy that weekend. I wish I would have been. I've read a research study since that time that says the first year after a baby is born is more stress on a person than a spouse dying. I guess it is supposed to be a pretty unhappy time for a lot of folks.
I do not even know what to make of that.
I guess I had some unbelievable stress going on for a while.
I sure do wish that I could have a redo. Some of the anxiety probably wouldn't change, but I do think that I've learned so much in the past two years about raising babies, I would be a lot less nervous about that part of it.
I have said it before, and I'll say it again. One of my biggest regrets may always be that Steve's last year was not our best year. It's difficult to be new, unsure, nervous, excited parents. It's a huge amount of change. I was still adapting during that last cabin weekend.
Happy Memorial Day, Stephen. You would have really been enjoying life with these two fun babies. I still remember when you told that transporter at Community North who was taking you for the liver biopsy, that you couldn't wait to teach your kids how to fish. I wish that would have worked out.
