Today, I heard about Sheryl Sandberg's commencement address for graduating UC Berkeley students this past weekend. She is the forty-something year-old, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, and several of you recommended that I read something she wrote following her husband's sudden death last May.
Her address sounded touching and memorable. Her point being that all of us will face adversity in life. And "you will be remembered not just by what you achieve, but by how you survive."
I was saddened to read many of the Internet comments about her presentation. Lots of individuals said how selfish she was for focusing on herself for a commencement address...they said that it wasn't that unique to lose a spouse. Others wrote that it must be difficult for her to make it as a single parent with all of her wealth.
Social media has made the world so much smaller. I am overwhelmingly thankful that it has brought me in contact with a faceless tribe that I sense cheering me on even in my darkest moments.
And then, there is the flip side. The comments that I read about this brave woman made me sad. There was so much hate. I don't care if she is rich or if she's dating again or if she went back to work after 10 days or if she helped to develop Facebook policies that people don't like or if she's Jewish. Shockingly, these were all part of the negative commentary that I read.
I really don't have much of a point here. Just talking a little about my day, I guess, since you guys are my 'adult conversation' now. Wishing that people had been nicer to her. It's just sad...I guess that's all.
