The Story About Awareness

Friday, November 13th is the second annual World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness day and marks eight months since my husband passed away.

Please think of Steve on Friday if you have a moment.  As the incidence of pancreatic cancer rises, unfortunately many more will be impacted by this horrible disease...yet research remains severely underfunded.
  • Pancreatic cancer is on the rise...especially among younger adults.
  • Every day 905 individuals die of pancreatic cancer.
  • Regardless of stage, only about 6% of patients live five years.  For Steve's stage...1%.
  • Pancreatic cancer generally causes very few symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, it is often advanced.  The life expectancy of Stage 4 is three to six months with chemotherapy.
  • Researchers estimate that around 2020, pancreatic cancer will become the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States.
  • Deaths for nearly every other cancer are declining, but the survival rates for pancreatic cancer have not changed in 40 years.
  • Rates of pancreatic cancer are much higher in North America and Europe.
  • There are no early detection tools or truly effective treatments for pancreatic cancer.
  • From 2010 to 2030, the incidence of pancreatic cancer is projected to increase by 55%.

  1. Thank you for the information. So very, very sorry you had to learn this first-hand. Steve's shoes almost add to the words you posted here: steps through this horrific disease and now the shoes are empty. So sad.
